Hot Pepper Seeds, Ojeenmma
Description
(Capsicum chinense). This spectacular habanero-type pepper variety was introduced to us by Solomon Amuzu, our partner in Ghana. The indigenous Ga people of Accra discovered and began cultivating Ojeenmma over 200 years ago. Ojeenmma means “aromatic,” and this delicious pepper lives up to its name! It is usually blended with tomato, onions, ginger, and garlic and served with traditional fermented corn doughs like kenkey or banku. This disease- and pest-resistant variety is still widely cultivated throughout Ghana and is super easy to grow!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs
Growing Tips
The Ojeenmma pepper is a traditional heirloom pepper that thrives in warm conditions with 8–12 hours of sun and well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. We recommend using a heat mat for faster germination.
When to Grow
Begin seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before the final frost, then transplant outdoors once temperatures consistently stay above 65 F. Check your local area’s frost dates to determine the best planting time. Ojeenmma peppers are best suited for USDA Zones 9–11 but can be grown as annuals in cooler zones if given plenty of warmth.
How to Sow and Plant
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting mix and keep the soil evenly moist. Transplant seedlings to the garden or containers once they are 3–4 inches tall, spacing plants 14–18 inches apart. These peppers adapt well to container gardening; use pots with at least 3 gallons of soil for optimal root development.
How to Grow
Ojeenmma peppers need 8-12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Water regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
How to Save
- Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
- To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
- It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
- To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
- Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
- Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
FAQ
Can Ojeenmma peppers be overwintered?
Yes, in regions where temperatures drop, Ojeenmma peppers can be brought indoors to overwinter. Place them in a sunny location or under grow lights, water sparingly, and protect them from frost. This can give plants a head start for the following season.
Can Ojeenmma peppers be grown indoors?
Yes, they adapt well to indoor growing in large containers as long as they receive enough sunlight or have supplemental grow lights.
What pests and diseases affect Ojeenmma peppers?
Common issues include aphids, spider mites, and fungal diseases. Applying neem oil can help manage pests, while mulching and proper spacing can improve air circulation and reduce disease risks.
