What are the pros? Phenomenal taste and texture
What are the cons? Nothing
At least in our area, these are not the easiest plants to grow - they take a long time to mature, must be hand-pollinated in really hot, humid weather if you want the fruit to set, and flea beetles will mow them down if you don't take some sort of preventative measure. (We found that the easiest thing to do was to grow them in pots placed about 3' above the ground. Zero flea beetle problems. However, the ones at ground level got so ravaged that they died. At least the flea beetles have good taste, I guess?)
But it's totally worth it! Big, sweet, meaty, gorgeous fruits that keep well and cook well. No bitterness at all - these taste complex and sweet, just a joy to eat, you barely have to prep them - throw them on the grill and maybe salt them. They're worlds away from grocery store eggplants. Also the plants themselves are beautiful!
