What are the pros? Easy, good in recipes
What are the cons? inconsistent, not great raw
First time growing carrots since I left Florida. These were okay. They're very good cooked in recipes as part of mirepoix, but have a very strong parsnippy flavor raw, with some individuals quite bitter. Actually they'd be best used like parsnips and I've made a couple heavy autumn soups with them in that role (since my parsnips didn't grow this year). Roots struggled in my heavy compost, but those that made it to sandy clay loam topsoil were very straight and pretty. They were easy to grow: I sowed them, thinned the seedlings, and then forgot about them until August. Nice foliage, too, the prettiest thing in the garden this year until the seasoning peppers started to ripen.
