Easy to grow long day onion. It was one of the most largely cultivated onions in France and in many parts of central Europe in the early 1900s. Round shape getting flat on the roots side. About 3” in size. Yellow straw-like skin color (“Paille” means straw in French) with a white to pale greenish inside color.

What are the pros? Good size, good flavor

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

I do not have an indoor light system for starting onions early, and on top of that I was late getting my onions started outdoors (end of April). Jaune Paille des Vertus produced bigger bulbs than any of the other onions I planted. Most of the others had marble-sized bulbs; JPV were 1-1/2 inches across. I'm very pleased, because these are the first onions I've had any success with worth speaking of. Next year I will try starting them earlier. Very delicious, almost like a sweet onion, but with more flavor and substance.

What are the pros? great germ rate

What are the cons? don't try to transplant them

Review:

When I was learning to run a farm, I was taught to transplant alliums. These don't like it at all. I think I had about a 90% germ rate in my trays, but only a handful of them survived transplanting, and the weather was perfect for it, and it's my first time growing onions on this land so there wasn't any noticeable pest burden--they just didn't root properly. =(

What are the pros? Great taste, long storage

What are the cons? none

Review:

I have been growing these for several years and LOVE them! They have a wonderful flavor, and are a good size - not gargantuan, but not too small. One or two is enough for most dishes. Their flatter shape and extremely long storage life make them perfect for braiding. I've had braids of Juane's last for more than 13th months before sprouting. And they look lovely hanging in the kitchen!
