Kajari Melon

Took three years to grow this melon due to cucumber beetle larvae eating roots of vines. Drench with imidacloprid protected plants for the season. Fruits matured well and lasted in refrigerator well. Beautiful, but disappointed in taste. Not sweet as expected. Tasted like a very dull, bland honeydew. I have never given poor review on a plant before but very disappointed after 3 seasons of efforts.

This is our first time growing the wonderful Kajari Melon and certainly wont be our last! The taste is out of this world, could not compare to any other melon variety i have tried...and believe me I have tried an array! Abundant harvest, easy to grow and fun to talk about the origin from which its original home was. My only question is how can I save this seed in a easy and clean way?? I find it tricky due to the mucilaginous coating around each seed. I thought soaking it would help but it only ferments while doing so and is still tricky. I have to save this seed, it is so abundant with many in the melon, id be completely ignorant to ignore it wanting to be saved and replanted/ gifted to other farmer friends of mine! If any one can share their method, id much appreciate it! Thank you Baker Creek for providing unique and exquisite seeds, by far one of my favorite sites to purchase rare seeds from!!! :)

First melon smelled good before cutting, may have got too anxious to try and not completely ripe, my fault. After cutting it had no flavor. After first melon harvest the rest have been superb, wonderful smell and taste. Mice and chipmunks have enjoyed some but not many. Don't mind sharing as long as they only ruin a few. Vines rambled out covering ground without any weeds being able to get through the vines, a plus. Melons are close to two pounds each. Easy to determine when ripe. Color and when stem slips easily by just lightly touching. there ready for the table. Easy to devour half a melon at one setting. Would recommend planting this wonderful melon. Flesh is much softer, light green in color, than the Honey Dews you get in the restaurants. Taste is marvelous. Thanks to Baker Creek supplying this seed.

Update: It's August 14th and I've harvested my first fruit after 95 d. When the seeds hadn't sprouted, I tested them with the damp paper towel in a baggie method. There I had 100% germination. I planted those on 5/11/17. The fruit set once we had 90 plus temperatures. We've had temps of 115 frequently, and the melon thrived. It has a deep sawdust mulch topdressing to keep water in the soil. The fruits weigh about a pound. The exterior was not as orange, but a bit duller/brownish. Interior was all green, as the edge of the flesh in the picture. Skin split, perhaps cat claws, and slipped off the vine. It was extra juicy. The flavor was more starchy than sweet. It had a pleasant melon aftertaste. May need storage for sweetness. Vines are still setting fruit. There are about 3 per vine currently. It's rambling over a low chicken wire fence and seems quite content. The plant has withstood our typical challenges with mildew, cuke and mex beetles, monsoon.

The Kajari Melon can be thought of as a Cross between an Xmas Ornament and a Honeydew Melon. Kajari is the Hindi word for a proficient dancing girl, and this melon is definitely that showy. Don't expect great taste, but don't expect disappointment either. If you can grow it in the fall, you could expect to capitalize upon the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas markets due to it's flashy orange, green, and off-white coloration. What you are growing with this is an edible ornament that actually tastes good.
