This a new Baker Creek employee favorite for its stunning ornamental qualities. The rich two-tone red and green perilla has a ruby-to-garnet underside of the leaf that easily displays. Endless summer and fall ornamental, culinary, and medicinal potential uses for this strikingly beautiful and sturdy plant that is a favorite in its native Japan.

Can be toxic to cattle and other livestock, especially horses

What are the pros? pretty texture

What are the cons? slow to sprout

Review:

This is a really pretty plant. the purple is nice and deep. i planted it with the radishes and spinach in a sunny location. i had nearly given up on it, but it started to come up right as the radishes bolted spinach was done. it is a slow strong grower and does fabulously in our missouri heat and humidity. when other plants look droopy and start to bolt, this is lush and consistent with growth. i have it near zuchinni, tomatoes, basil, daisies, and tuscan kale. it adds depth and color. as for eating, it won't be the star of the show or steal it, but it will add beautiful color and texture. it also needs less water than my other greens. to be honest, I have mostly ignored it and it didn't mind at all.

What are the pros? Gorgeous ornamental

What are the cons? Tasteless

Review:

This variety grew very easily and was very beautiful, but it really did not have the flavor of either the red or green shiso. I will continue to grow this variety only for its ornamental quality, while growing the other varieties for their rich taste. It did very well in the high desert with hot days and cool nights, just had to mulch and water well.
