Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Superschmelz is well-suited for cool-weather growing, typically in spring and fall. Ensure it is planted in full sun, receiving 6-12 hours of sunlight daily. The soil should be well-drained, fertile, and enriched with organic matter. Regular watering is essential, as the plant requires consistent moisture to prevent the bulbs from cracking or becoming tough.

When to Grow

Superschmelz is best planted in the cooler parts of the growing season. For a spring harvest, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, or sow them directly in the garden 2-3 weeks before the last frost. For a fall harvest, sow seeds outdoors in mid to late summer, allowing about 6-8 weeks before the first frost. In mild climates, Superschmelz can even be left in the ground over winter for a late harvest.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Superschmelz seeds about 1/4 inch deep in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to stand 8-12 inches apart to give these large plants enough room to grow. If starting indoors, transplant seedlings when they are 4-6 weeks old and hardened off. Ensure that they are spaced adequately to accommodate their size.

How to Grow

Superschmelz requires consistent moisture and should be watered regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. This variety is not a heavy feeder, but applying a balanced organic fertilizer or compost during the growing season will support healthy growth. Watch for common pests like cabbage worms and flea beetles, and use organic methods for control, such as insecticidal soap or row covers.

How to Save
  • Like its cabbage cousin, kohlrabi is a biennial and must be overwintered to produce seeds.
  • Kohlrabi is hardy down to 20 F. Those in areas with mild winters should have no issue keeping plants alive over winter.
  • In cooler regions, kohlrabi must be dug up and overwintered in sand in the root cellar. Kohlrabi stored this way should not be allowed to dry up and may need light watering while in storage.
  • Replant them after the last frost and allow them to go to seed.
  • Pick the seed pods after they are thoroughly dried and place them in a cloth bag. You will need to use a hammer or step on the stubborn pods to free the seeds.
  • Separate seeds from the chaff (leaf, pod, and stem trash) and store them in glass jars in the refrigerator.
