Lavender - Munstead Strain

(Lavandula vera) Perennial. Compact, superior northern-hardy strain. The plants seldom exceed a foot in height. Use the fragrant spikes as you would any lavender—potpourris, sachets, dried arrangements, etc. The silvery-gray foliage is elegant, even when out of flower. A reliable as well as beautiful old-fashioned garden favorite.

What are the pros? Sprouts easily

What are the cons? Requires know how

Review:

I wanted to leave this review in case anyone else finds the instructions slightly confusing... On my first try I put the seeds in the fridge as instructed, waited the requisite time, planted them out, and got absolutely nothing. Thankfully I hadn’t planted all my seeds and had some left in the fridge, because after another week or so, THOSE seeds had all sprouted. So if you’re struggling with germination, just leave them in the fridge until they sprout, however long that takes. Unfortunately my seedlings all died quite suddenly after seeming very happy for several weeks running. I am 99.999% sure this is my own fault, since this has been happening with a good 50% of my seedlings this year. Not sure what’s going on there, but do be careful with these little guys. They start out VERY small and fragile. I’ll try them again next year, once I’ve figured out my seedling curse...

Review:

This lavender is wasy to sprout. I kept seeds in ‘fridge for two weeks then planted them and they sproated, no problem. Tiny sprouts smell of lavender already. Love it.

What are the pros? Hardy in zone 5b

What are the cons? Needs a year to get going well

Review:

After some initial research, I chose this strain because of its hardiness in my zone. I had read that lavender was difficult to germinate from seed, but I didn't have any trouble, even sitting beside a cold window in the winter time. After starting my plant babies, I realized that I wanted more, so I went to the garden store and bought more of this variety. While I did get some buds the first year, I left them alone to give the plant a chance to grow. In the second year, the ones that I started from seed are the same size if not larger than the plants that I purchased at the garden center. The fragrance of this variety is pleasant, but not overwhelming. I have also used my lavender in various recipes including lavender cupcakes, chamomile lavender scones, lavender simple syrup, and tea. Again, there was a pronounced lavender flavor, but it was not overwhelming. I dried both the buds and the leaves by laying a paper towel in a cool, dark place. It dried beautifully.

What are the pros? Hardy, aromatic

What are the cons? none

Review:

Able to sprout it up against a chilly winter window with little light in a cool bathroom. Seemed to like the the coolness. I was amazed at the how many came up. sprouted pennyroyale next to them with same result. They over wintered for three years so far next to a rock wall facing south.
