Growing Tips

Bronze Beauty lettuce is a hardy heirloom variety ideal for cool-weather gardening. This lettuce grows best in moist, fertile soil enriched with compost. The optimal soil pH ranges from 6.0 to 6.8. It is tolerant of light frost and some heat but prefers cooler growing conditions. To maintain soil moisture and temperature, use mulch. Ensure the lettuce receives 4-8 hours of sunlight per day, although it can benefit from partial shade in hotter climates.

When to Grow

Bronze Beauty lettuce can be grown in early spring and late summer for fall harvests. It is best suited for USDA zones 3-9. The ideal temperature range for growing this lettuce is between 60 F and 80 F. In cooler climates, consider using cold frames to extend the growing season. For precise planting times, refer to regional frost date charts to avoid late frosts. The plant matures in about 40-50 days.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow in thick bands for baby greens or space farther apart for head lettuce. Sow seeds directly into the garden at a depth of 1/4 inch. Thin seedlings to 8 inches apart to allow adequate growth. You can also start seeds indoors and transplant them later. For continuous harvests, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks. In areas with high temperatures, provide some shade to prevent bolting.

How to Grow

Bronze Beauty lettuce needs consistent moisture but avoid overwatering, especially during cooler months to prevent freezing. Water early in the day to reduce the risk of ice formation. This variety is known for its heat tolerance and slow bolting, making it an excellent choice for both spring and fall gardening. Ensure proper weeding as the young plants have shallow roots and are vulnerable to competition. Use organic fertilizers rich in nitrogen to support rapid growth.

How to Save

  • Lettuce is a self-pollinating annual, making it an easy crop for seed saving.
  • Do not harvest plants. Allow them to send up flower stalks.
  • Once seed heads are dried and have turned a yellowish-tan color, cut the entire stalk and place in a bag.
  • Crush the seed heads in the bag and separate the chaff.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 years.
