(Lactuca sativa). Leaf. Our best tasting lettuce, incredible, rich, tangy flavor makes this Chinese lettuce the staff favorite!! The flavor has hints of Granny Smith apples and its distinctive taste makes other lettuce seem pale and bland by comparison. Goes great with poppy seed dressing, and it complements the flavor of apples and other fruit. Super easy-to-grow, this has become our favorite leaf lettuce of all time! Introduced to us as the “best” lettuce by friends in Japan, we are truly honored to offer this famous, crisp and juicy, salad lettuce of China.

Growing Tips

Hao Shan lettuce prefers loose, fertile soil with consistent moisture. Avoid water stress to prevent bitterness or bolting. Succession planting every 2–3 weeks extends harvest. Partial shade is helpful in warmer climates to delay bolting and preserve flavor.

When to Grow

Sow in early spring as soon as soil is workable or in late summer for a fall harvest. In mild winter zones, Hao Shan lettuce can be grown year-round under protection. How to Sow and Plant

Direct sow or start indoors and transplant. Plant seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in rows or blocks. Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart to allow for mature heads. Keep soil moist for optimal germination and establishment.

How to Grow

Water evenly and often to encourage tender growth. Fertilize lightly every few weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer. Use row covers to deter pests like aphids and flea beetles. Shade in hot weather helps prolong harvest.

How to Save

  • Allow healthy plants to bolt and flower.
  • Let seed heads mature and dry on the plant.
  • Cut dry seed stalks and bag them to finish drying indoors.
  • Shake or crush seed heads to release seeds.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in airtight containers.
