Description

(Lactuca sativa) Cos. The ancient ‘greasy’ lettuce of historic Constantinople is excellent for salads and grilling. This is a romaine variety, with long leaves, a crisp center, and white seeds. It has been cultivated for 1,500 years in Istanbul’s famous Bostanlar urban gardens, which are now threatened by urban sprawl. Recognized by the Ark of Taste, Yedikule lettuce is known for its incredible flavor and tender, naturally oily leaves that need no dressing. Thanks to Kate Jantz-Koprivnik for growing and sharing these seeds. We are delighted to offer this gourmet and culturally significant lettuce!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Yedikule lettuce is best grown as a spring or fall crop in most areas. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter, requiring 4-8 hours of sun daily. The ideal temperature for optimal growth is 60-80 F. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

When to Grow

Yedikule lettuce thrives in cooler weather, making it best to plant in early spring or late summer. Sow the seeds directly in the garden once the soil can be worked in spring or start them indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date. This lettuce variety can also be grown in fall for a late-season harvest.

How to Sow and Plant

For heading lettuce, sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them about 8 inches apart. For baby greens or loose-leaf lettuce, scatter the seeds thickly and lightly rake them into the soil. Ensure the soil is consistently moist during the germination period, which can take 1-2 weeks depending on the temperature. Thin seedlings to allow sufficient space for mature plants, typically about 8 inches apart.

How to Grow

Yedikule lettuce prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering is crucial to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests such as cutworms and slugs, using organic methods like placing a stick near the stem to deter cutworms or setting up traps for slugs.

How to Save

  • Lettuce is a self-pollinating annual, making it an easy crop for seed saving.
  • Do not harvest plants. Allow them to send up flower stalks.
  • Once seed heads are dried and have turned a yellowish-tan color, cut the entire stalk and place in a bag.
  • Crush the seed heads in the bag and separate the chaff.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 years.

FAQ

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, approximately 1 inch per week. Avoid waterlogging as it can lead to root diseases.

Can Yedikule lettuce be grown in containers?
Yes, Yedikule lettuce can be grown in containers. Use a pot with good drainage and at least 6 inches deep. Ensure the container is placed in a sunny location.

How do I prevent Yedikule lettuce from bolting?
