Eggplants in Michigan Zone 6A
Easy to Grow 4.0
EarlyMaturity 5.0

What are the pros? Flavor germination appearance

What are the cons? Pest Control

This is my third year growing these beauties. Here in Michigan zone 6A I typically start my plants indoors in March and plant outdoors in containers or raised beds. They always grow well and produce wonderfully but the first year the leaves were hit hard by ants colonizing the plants with black aphids. Once I got rid of the ants (capped water bottle with 1 tbsp each of borax, sugar and honey with a small hole in the side for the ants to get in) the aphids were easy to get rid of with water from a garden hose and then an insecticide spray of cold pressed need with azadirachtin (2tbsp in 1 gallon water with a little mild detergent). Still get some holes in the leaves but overall beautiful plants and incredible flavor. Even larger eggplants seem to avoid bitterness and definitely less "slimy" texture than other kinds. This is definitely one of my favorites.
