What a perfect little plant. Very much a gem. I grew about five different lettuces this year. a mix of romaines/ cos and butterhead from Baker Creek. All of my lettuces did/ are still doing exceptionally well, no issues at all, but LIttle Gem is my favorite (unless I'm making lettuce wraps, leaves are too small/ snappy stems for that). Has a great crunch and I love harvesting these as a whole head. I find the texture and flavor is best when matured fully and not as a baby green. Very crispy, succulent, mild romaine but not boring like an iceberg. Less bitter than other romaines I've grown. It's perfect with a Cesar or other creamy dressing.
In the garden, the compact size and upright habit make it perfect for close planting, or staggering with more unruly lettuces and larger plants. I currently have some inter-planted with my peppers and tomatoes, where they benefit from a little shade in the height of summer.
