Macarenia Zinnia

Annual. Ravishing flowers look like crimson velvet laced with gold! Large dahlia-flowered blooms are very double, two-toned in gold and red. The full-sized plants are just a bit compact, and the generous yield of blooms makes this an especially good variety for cut flowers. And if it’s a trifle gaudy, well, that’s just how we like our zinnias to be!

What are the pros? Fast flowers

What are the cons? None so far

Review:

I planted seeds of this variety, Will Rogers, Canary, and Orange King on April 20th (2019). Today is June 8 and the first flowers (of this variety) have already opened! I started the seeds inside after trying a direct sow (which wasn’t very successful—maybe because of our unseasonably cool month of May). All the seeds I started inside grew to healthy, beautiful seedlings. I transplanted them outside around May 10. I’ll update later in the season, but since I’ve previously had good luck with the Orange King, I’m very hopeful these beauties will live through our low-desert summer.

What are the pros? Early bloomer! Vibrant colors

What are the cons? None

Review:

These are early blooming and haven't stopped with vibrant flowers since they started! Wonderful vibrant colors. They are a shorter variety and look great close to the walkway with the taller plants behind them!

What are the pros? Compact, healthy plants

What are the cons? Surprisingly plain flowers

Review:

I was looking forward to these Zinnias, since Baker Creek's described them as "[l]arge dahlia-flowered blooms [that] are very double". Unfortunately, the foregoing is not an accurate description of the flowers of the Macarenia Zinnia, which are small-ish, single- or (very compact) double-bloomed, and somewhat less stridently colored than pictured on Baker Creek's website. Had I known that both the plants and flowers would mature to be so compact, I probably would have given this Zinnia five stars and simply planted it in another spot, but since I was expecting "[l]arge dahlia-flowered blooms [that] are very double", I'm a bit disappointed. To mention the positives: The plants are compact and healthy and the flowers are lovely — for what they are — and have been durable and tough in demanding conditions.
