My father in law worked on farms, so probably came across these as animal feed. He also loved to make home made wine and recommended I try using Mangels.
Their high sugar content is one reason this works, but their flavour is the other. You are unlikely to have come across this from any other source - just peel, slice and boil up a couple for an hour. Use the resulting liquor and add sugar, yeast & some lemon juice.
It's worth leaving a year, but the result definitely repay the investment.
