What are the pros? Great taste, prolific
What are the cons? Fruits take awhile to develop
I first learned of these peppers ten years ago when living in the Kansai area of Japan where this variety hails from. Absolutely delicious! They were originally developed through a breeding program at a Kyoto temple (hence the came Manganji togarashi) as a cross between a California bell and a shishito. These were always expensive in the supermarkets in Japan so I love I can grow them now!
The fruits do take awhile to develop. I planted my seedlings in April and at tail end of July am just starting to harvest. We like to grill them to a nice char, then drizzle with soy sauce in a metal bowl and cover with plastic wrap to let them steam a bit and soak up the sauce. Delicious with grilled chicken!
