What are the pros? Most any soil
What are the cons? Excess Summer heat
These are beautifully blooming plants, lovely flowers, and with a delicate, exquisite fragrance. They will grow in just about any soil. They are easy to grow, produce masses of fragrant blossoms, and will reseed themselves aggressively. They will grow back from tubers the next year, and the plants that grow from tubers are even bigger than the ones from seed.
Sadly, they will not thrive in excessive heat. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, and our summer temps exceed 110 degrees on a regular basis. This will kill these plants. The few plants that survive seem to be stunted to the point that they never recover. On the positive side, we can make late summer or early fall plantings, and those will grow and bloom into the fall and early winter. We don't always get killing frosts, and so it is possible for them to survive the winter and continue to grow into the spring until the summer heat kills them.
