Description

(Mentha arvensis). This is the delicious unmistakable mint of Thai cuisine. We love this refreshing herb in so many recipes, it is versatile and mouth-watering. Mature plants reach about 18-20 inches tall and should be spaced about 2 feet apart. Ideal for a medium-sized, 12-inch pot. This is a true mint and does like to spread and creep across the garden, so consider growing in containers and giving regular haircuts!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Thai mint is a perennial heirloom herb that thrives in full to partial sun and prefers moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Keep the soil consistently moist and apply a balanced fertilizer regularly for better growth. Like other mint varieties, it spreads aggressively, so planting it in a container or contained garden space is recommended.

When to Grow

Plant Thai mint after the danger of frost has passed in spring. In colder climates, it can be grown as an annual or kept in a container and brought indoors during winter. To determine the best planting time for your area, consult local frost dates. If you're not sure how to do that, check out our blog post, ‘Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’

How to Sow and Plant

Loosen the soil to at least 6 inches deep and mix in compost for added nutrients. Dig a 1-2 inch deep hole and place the plant inside, making sure that the roots are fully covered while keeping the stem above soil level. Gently press down the soil, water thoroughly, and apply a light layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. For containers, use a pot at least 8-12 inches deep with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

How to Grow

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to promote vigorous growth. Once established, harvest stems frequently to encourage new shoots and prevent legginess. To keep the plant bushy, pinch back the tips regularly. Since Thai mint spreads aggressively through underground runners, it’s best kept in a pot or a controlled garden space to prevent it from overtaking other plants.

How to Save

  • Let flower spikes fully mature.

  • Remove spikes when flowers are dry.

  • Place spikes in a bag and shake to dislodge the seeds.

  • Alternatively, you can roll the flower spikes between your thumb and index finger over a plate to break the seeds free.

  • Separate the seeds from the chaff.

  • Store seeds in a cool, dry, dark place until you are ready to plant.

FAQ

Can I grow Thai mint indoors?
Yes, it does well next to a bright, sunny window with at least 4-6 hours of light per day. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and trim frequently for bushy growth.

How long does it take for Thai mint to mature?
Thai mint typically reaches full maturity in 60-90 days, but you can begin harvesting within 4-6 weeks after planting.

How do I prevent Thai mint from spreading too much?
Plant it in containers or raised beds with root barriers. Regularly harvesting and pruning also helps keep it under control.
