Murasaki Purple Pepper

An old Japanese pepper from the Nara prefecture. Tapered black pods are highly ornamental and look deceptively like a fiery hot pepper. In fact, the beautiful fruit is totally heatless. A new favorite at Baker Creek for its dramatic, dark purple fruit and flowers; even the foliage has a purplish haze. Very productive.

What are the pros? Color, flavor, lack of heat

What are the cons? None

Review:

Murasaki Purple is a good mid-season pepper that I was able to easily start indoors prior to our last frost date. My first red ripe pepper in zone 6 was on August 15. The color is so striking and intense that the 4 inch chilis are almost black before finally turning orange/red ripe. Even dead ripe, there is almost no heat, but plenty of chili flavor with a little sweetness and smokiness kicking around in there as well. In spite of being nearly heatless, this is not a bland pepper. I say they're excellent for salads and in stir frys where you crave pepper flavor, but without the burn. I suspect they're also loaded with anti-oxidants (anthocyanins) if you eat them in the purple stage due to the intense color. The plants themselves are relatively compact meaning they're suitable for raised bed or container gardening. I'll definitely grow them again.

What are the pros? High Yield, Container Freindly

What are the cons? None

Review:

I bought these seeds to grow in a container on my porch. The reason I chose this variety was the advertised purple color of the peppers- I thought they would be a nice ornamental addition. The peppers themselves are about 2" in length and the plant is high yielding, even on my partially shaded porch. The plant has grown to around 2 ft high in my 18" planter, and has about 20 peppers on it. The peppers are initially green and then transition to the dark purple color shown on the website. They stay in the purple phase for several weeks before turning a bright red color. The purple and red peppers taste like regular green and red bell peppers respectively (no heat). This has been a nice edible ornamental addition to my container garden.

What are the pros? Looks, disease resistance

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

This is a beautiful capsicum (pepper) with it’s dark purple stems flowers and fruits. Not only is it beautiful but productive also - mine is covered! It is also very disease resistant as all my other capsicums succumbed following a week of rain but not this little beauty. The fruits have thick walls and good green pepper taste with absolutely no heat (despite their looks and smell) while purple/black. I’m waiting to see if they ripen to red and get a bit sweeter. Will definitely plant again!
