Growing Tips

Green Wave mustard thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It requires 6-12 hours of sun, making it an excellent choice for spring and fall planting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent bitterness and promote growth. For optimal growth, add compost or aged manure to the soil before planting.

When to Grow

Plant mustard greens in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest. Sow seeds 3-4 weeks before the last expected freeze date in spring or 6-8 weeks before the first expected freeze date in fall. Mustard seeds germinate quickly in soil temperatures as low as 40°F, but they grow best in temperatures between 55-70 degrees F.

How to Sow and Plant

Directly sow mustard seeds about 1/4 inch deep directly in the garden, and space plants 12 inches apart. For a continuous harvest, plant seeds every 2-3 weeks. Green Wave mustard can also be started indoors 2-3 weeks before the last freeze and transplanted outside once they have 3-4 true leaves. Sprouts appear in 5-8 days.

How to Grow

Green Wave mustard prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Keep the soil evenly moist, watering deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root development. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost tea every few weeks to promote healthy growth. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests like flea beetles and aphids, and use organic controls such as neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

How to Save

Brassica juncea is capable of self pollinating, but insects can cross pollinate the flowers with other varieties of B. juncea if growing within a 2-mile radius. If saving seeds, isolate the plants from other B. juncea varieties by 2 miles.

To save the seeds, allow pods to brown, dry, and become crispy. Shake pods into a paper bag to remove seeds.  Store seeds in a cool, dark, dry location.
