Nankeen Brown Cotton

(130 days) The original source for "khaki"! This short-stapled cotton of a rich medium brown color, morphs to a brighter copper hue as it is washed. The variety originated in China; fabric made from it and of the same name, was made into the most fashionable breeches in the middle of the 19th century. The variety does unusually well in poor, dry soil, and has better insect resistance than other cotton types. Easier to spin than some other cotton varieties. We received our original seed from a seed collector who favors the flesh-toned natural fibers for their unobtrusiveness when used for ear aches. Limited Supply.

What are the pros? beautiful, interesting, fun

What are the cons? needs support

I live in dryland cotton country, Texas panhandle. Above average rainfall this spring, highs in mid 90s. Planted 6 in poor, heavy clay soil. 2 germinated in mid May. Both plants were over 5 ft tall and did require some staking. Blooms were alternating, pink or a pale yellow. 100 /- bolls per plant tho some won't mature before frost. Picked first 5 open cotton bolls first week of October. Lots of seeds per boll, cotton is super soft and very pretty. Wish I could attach a photo. I grew this for the novelty primarily, but am saving the cotton to let our rabbits use for nesting material, and am saving seed for next year.
