This famous red walking onion from Pennsylvania is a favorite historic kitchen garden variety. The plants, which are also known as tree onions and perennial onions, produce bulbs at both the top and bottom of the plant. All parts of the plant - bottom bulbs, stems, and the bulbils or mini bulbs produced at the top of the 2- to 3-foot stalks - are edible.

Growing Tips

Red Catawissa Walking onions prefer rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Perennial in zones 3-9, this onion can be grown reliably in almost all U.S zones. They thrive in full sun and need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Amend the soil with compost to improve fertility. These onions can tolerate a range of temperatures but perform best in cooler climates.

When to Grow

The best time to plant Red Catawissa Walking onion is in the fall, typically between September and October. Fall planting allows the bulbs to establish roots before winter, resulting in earlier growth in spring. They are hardy and can overwinter in the ground. Can also be planted in early spring.

How to Sow and Plant

Preparation: Loosen the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and mix in compost.
Planting: Plant bulbils about 1-2 inches deep with the pointy end up. Space the bulbils around 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and reduce the need for frequent watering.

How to Grow

Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer or compost tea during the growing season.
Weeding: Keep the area weed-free to ensure the onions get sufficient nutrients and moisture.
Harvesting: The bulbils will produce small clusters of new bulbils on top of the stems. Harvest these as needed and replant for continuous growth.
