This famous red walking onion from Pennsylvania is a favorite historic kitchen garden variety. The plants, which are also known as tree onions and perennial onions, produce bulbs at both the top and bottom of the plant. All parts of the plant - bottom bulbs, stems, and the bulbils or mini bulbs produced at the top of the 2- to 3-foot stalks - are edible.

Growing Tips

Perennial in zones 3-9, this onion can be grown reliably in almost all U.S zones. Red Catawissa Walking onion thrives in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure. These onions can tolerate a range of soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.2-6.8). They are hardy and can grow in various climates, including cold winters and hot summers.

When to Grow

The best time to plant Red Catawissa Walking onion is in the fall, typically between September and October. This timing allows the plants to establish roots before winter. However, they can also be planted in early spring as soon as the ground thaws.

How to Sow and Plant

Preparation: Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 inches and incorporate organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.
Planting: Plant the bulbils or mature bulbs 1-2 inches deep with the pointy end up. Space the bulbs 6-8 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart to ensure adequate air circulation and access for maintenance.
Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and reduce the need for frequent watering.

How to Grow

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring when new growth begins. A mid-season side-dressing of compost or well-rotted manure can further promote healthy development.
Weeding: Keep the planting area free of weeds to minimize competition for nutrients and water.
Mulching: Use organic mulch like straw or leaves to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain even soil temperature.

FAQ

What is a walking onion?
The weight of the top bulbils will eventually cause the plant to flop over in fall and take root in a new place just a few feet away, hence "walking” across the garden.

Can I plant walking onions in the spring?
Yes, you can plant walking onions in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. However, fall planting is often preferred as it gives the plants a longer growing season to establish.

How do I know when to harvest Red Catawissa Walking onion?
Harvest mature bulbs in late summer when the tops begin to yellow and fall over. For the bulbils, wait until the stems have browned slightly before collecting them. Cure both types in a warm, dry place with good air circulation for 2-3 weeks before storage.
