This gorgeous variety was first shared by Shirley Floyd Hammond and her daughter Stephanie Tetterton. Click here to learn more about the special place that the onion holds in the family. A single bulb of these small, white-skinned onions will produce a clump of 7 to 15 onions. These onions are great to use in roasts and stews, but with their mild flavor, they’re also great raw.

Growing Tips

Shirley Hammond Multiplier onions thrive in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. They prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.2-7.0). These onions can be grown in various climates, handling both cold winters and warm summers effectively.

When to Grow

Plant Shirley Hammond Multiplier onions in the fall, ideally between September and October, to allow the bulbs to establish roots before winter. They can also be planted in early spring as soon as the soil is workable in most climates.

How to Sow and Plant

Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 inches, incorporating compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
Planting: Plant the cloves 1-2 inches deep with the pointed end up. Space the cloves 4-6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart to ensure adequate air circulation and easy maintenance.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and encourage root development.

How to Grow

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring when new growth begins. A mid-season application of compost or well-rotted manure can promote healthy development.
Weeding: Keep the planting area free of weeds to minimize competition for nutrients and water.
Mulching: Use organic mulch like straw or leaves to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain an even soil temperature.
Replanting: To save bulbs for replanting, pull and allow them to cure for a few weeks in a warm, airy place, away from direct sunlight, then store them in a cool, dry place.
