This lovely mix contains pretty shades of pink, purple, and white. Contrasts nicely with the deep green outer leaves. Also known as Flowering Kale, the plants look like huge frilly flowers. The leaves make a superb garnish and are good as cooked greens. Best grown as a fall plant because colors are more intense in cool weather.

What are the pros? Very Pretty!

What are the cons? Finicky

Review:

I had high hopes for this ornamental kale. Two years ago I planted it in the bed around my house. I left it to it's own devices and it never sprouted. Last year I planted a section of it in my row of kale in the veggie garden and the three other types grown side by side in the same row completely outperformed it. After planting it was the last to come up and the most sparse. You should have seen my red russian kale...it was enormous!! As it grew it was waaaay behind the others, despite the manure tea and mulch (both of which all of the kales got). In the fall it changed color and was very pretty, but there wasn't even enough to safely pick to eat. The other kale went crazy and I picked and ate and froze loads of it. That was my experience. :)

Review:

This kale is sooo pretty and sooo easy to grow. I grew it as an early crop. We have had extremely warm weather for weeks and no rain ( we are breaking a warmth and draught record soon from 1976). I do not water these plants much, cause they seem to flourish. They are eaten by critters, but nu not many. Other cabbage family plants I grow have more issues. I have a very vibrant pink colour in these plants, despite it not being cold at all. I am going to grow a late crop aswell, to see if the plants will be any different in their growing behaviour. Taste wise this kale is very nice aswell. I gave 2 plants to a neighbour at the allotment and she said she never tasted a kale this good. We are very pleasantly suprised by this kale. A new favorite!!

What are the pros? Colors, Leaf Shape

What are the cons? none

Review:

I bought this kale mostly as an ornamental, but it's our new favorite kale to eat as well! This is the perfect variety for making kale chips because the leaves are round, have a fairly uniform thickness, and no thick stems to deal with. Additionally, the leaves seem more robust than other varieties, which makes for a hardier, crisper kale chip. In the fall, they turned purple, pink and white; truly the star of our fall garden.

Review:

I planted this in my first year garden, and it was the best producer of all the other plants. I absolutely love this kale! It is very hardy and survived some droughts, bugs and winter (in Southeast Georgia). It is in my garden right now with tons of seed pods. The leaves are very beautiful and I harvested them when needed. I mostly cook them in my eggs for breakfast.

What are the pros? Easy, prolific, pretty, yummy

What are the cons? NONE

Review:

This kale definitely has it all: Easy, prolific, pretty, yummy. Except the slight bitterness kale sometimes comes with. This one is definitely a sweeter kale, and has been a favorite with all my friends and family. Because yes, I had enough to give away after I froze several gallon bags worth.
