Painted Lady Sweet Pea

One of the most fragrant sweet peas, the flowers are striking bi-colored deep pink and white. This variety is quite old, dating to the 1730s. It is becoming very popular with seed savers and is a very good producer of flowers with rich, old-time sweet scent.

What are the pros? Color and Ease

What are the cons? Some people dislike scent

Review:

These are a fun color combination. The flowers start out a deep, strawberry pink with white and then fade to a pastel pink and white once they've been in a vase for a day or two. Both versions are pretty. The scent on these is strong but it seems to be slightly less powdery than other sweet peas. Compared to other varieties, these vines were shorter. They topped out at around 2.5 to 3 feet. I've grown these in Dallas (zone 8a) and Central Texas (9a) and the trick is to plant them in October and let them overwinter in the ground. I don't bother mulching or covering them unless we have a freak cold snap with multiple days in the teens. They'll sprout in the fall and then really take off around February. Make sure your trellis is in place in early February. They bloom in March and April.

What are the pros? amazing scent

What are the cons? N/A

Review:

I love sweet peas and this one is definitely a favorite! I have it growing near my steps on trellis and the smell walking by it is amazing! My only complaint is it never seems to grow much over 2.5-3 feet tall. Although that could be on my end as it is in a very sunny and often dry spot.

What are the pros? Nice rich soil

What are the cons? Don't know

Review:

A gorgeous old flower i have to have each season, if your soil is nice & rich & a bit of lime each year they will readily self seed .
