Uniformly red 8 to 12 inch ears, with the red in varying shades, including deep oxblood and occasional bright red ears, unique and beautiful! Compact plants about 4 feet tall, taking heat, cool weather and drought in stride. Excellent, very early new flour type.

What are the pros? short season, beautiful

What are the cons? none

Review:

This corn is easy to grow and beautiful! It doesn't take much space. Grew and produced in dry weather. I like the short season. Our garden is surrounded by field corn and it did not cross pollinate, which meant a lot to us. It is both beautiful and delicious! Makes beautiful flour. We are currently soaking some to make corn nuts. Very pleased.

What are the pros? Lovely shades of red

What are the cons? None

Review:

I have planted a patch of 16 plants of Papa's red. When they were 12 inches tall, my chickens ate most of the plant :(. Still I got some ears and they were stunning red. I have left them for saving seeds, so I can plant more next year.

Review:

I too wish to follow up Dave Christensen's comments about Papa's Red. Baker Creek Seeds is blessed and honored to have both the Painted Mountain and the Papa's trio in our offerings. They rank among the most beautiful corns on the planet and the developers of these have added another beautiful ingredient....They have poured their hearts into them. Thank you to Dave Christensen and Ed Schultz for letting Baker Creek Seeds be a part of distributing these truly amazing varieties.

What are the pros? Easy to grow for grain.

What are the cons? NONE

Review:

This red corn produces a majority of ears the color of a fire engine, or like maraschino cherries. A few will be darker, a very few lighter. The developer Ed Schultz, is a good friend of mine. I am the developer of Painted Mountain Corn. Ed's corns and my Painted Mtn. corn are "cousins". We have exchanged "champion ears" with each other over the decades. Ed has purified this red line for all the modifier genes that make it dependably the most beautiful red you will ever see. Everyone is attracted to them. They disappear at farmer's markets like snow on hot pavement! Developed in a cool, dry northern climate, Ed's corns are grown dryland without water. Ed's high elevation and short season have created one of the most cold hardy and fastest maturing corns in the world. The short efficient plants produce long beautiful ears. I am happy to see Ed put this on the market, for it's beauty and as the ultimate survival food. The soft flour starch makes great corn bread.
