(Carica papaya) Your order contains 3 plants. This old-fashioned red-fleshed papaya is a classic from Hawaii! With flesh that is extra sweet and flavorful, this variety was selected by the Hawaiian plant expert David Maki over the last 50 years. Must be grown in tropical or sub-tropical conditions. Self-fertile, but better fruit set when grown with other papayas

Please consider these terms before ordering live plants: Most plants will be 3”-7” in height. Please make sure you are ready for your order in your zone as these young, tender plants generally have no resistance to cold.

Growing Tips

Sweet David papaya thrives in warm, humid conditions with well-draining, fertile soil. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain too much water. Regular watering is necessary, but do not allow standing water around the roots. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH and benefits from monthly feeding during the growing season. Provide protection from strong wind and ensure consistent moisture for best fruit production.

When to Grow

Plant Sweet David papaya in spring or early summer when soil temperatures consistently remain above 65°F. In tropical and subtropical climates, it can be planted year-round. How to Sow and Plant

Select a sunny location with rich, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container. If planting multiple trees, space them 7-10 feet apart. Water deeply after planting and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

How to Grow

Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Papayas are heavy feeders and require frequent fertilization with a balanced or high-potassium fertilizer. Remove any weak or damaged stems to encourage strong growth. Flowers and fruit appear within months, with mature fruit ready to harvest in 9-11 months.

How to Save

  • Collect seeds from a ripe Sweet David papaya.
  • Wash and dry the seeds before planting.
  • Sow seeds in well-draining soil, 1/2 inch deep, and keep moist.
  • Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks.
  • Transplant seedlings when they reach 6-12 inches tall.
  • Alternatively, propagate from cuttings of mature plants in warm conditions.

FAQ

How can I tell if my papaya is ripe?
A ripe Sweet David papaya will have a yellow-orange skin and yield slightly to gentle pressure. It should also emit a sweet fragrance. If picked green, allow it to ripen at room temperature.

Why is my papaya tree dropping fruit before ripening?
Fruit drop can be caused by inconsistent watering, nutrient deficiencies, or lack of pollination. Ensure the plant receives regular moisture, balanced fertilization, and, if needed, hand-pollinate flowers to improve fruit set.

Can I grow Sweet David papaya in a container?
Yes, papayas can be grown in large containers (at least 15-20 gallons) with well-draining soil. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering and fertilization. Ensure they receive full sun and are protected from strong winds.
