Parris Island Cos Lettuce

This variety boasts all the merits of a commercially bred variety, but the crisp and sweetly scrumptious leaves say heirloom. Parris Island Cos is a Romaine lettuce that is beloved by growers, especially on the Eastern Seaboard where it was originally introduced by Ferry Morse in 1951. Super uniform, upright leaves, observed disease tolerance and moderate bolt resistance were the growing traits selected at Clemson College Agriculture department when it was bred for their South Carolina climate. The tender crisp leaves with delicate white hearts and the perfectly folded centers for scooping dips or holding dressings have won the hearts of gardeners for generations.

Review:

I really enjoyed this lettuce. It grew in abundance, the taste was great and not at all bitter. It bolted around the end of of July or beginning of August in our Colorado heat. I am going to grow this one again!

What are the pros? Easy to grow.

What are the cons? Taste and texture

Review:

This lettuce grew fantastic....HOWEVER....did not find it to be tender, and water crunchy. Leaves are beautiful in appearance, easy to clean, but a lil too heavy and dry for my taste in a Romaine lettuce. Had to save first couple of layers of leaves for sandwiches only, just too thick and flat for a fluffy Ceaser salad. Taste was okay, the center portions more tolerable. Hate to be the sour grape in all these great ratings..., but my honest opinion. 4 stars becuase it grows so well and looks nice in the garden! Will try another variety.

Review:

Until now, I've never been able to grow lettuce well. These seeds sprouted less than a week after I started them, and I set them outside to catch the last few frosts before transplanting them after the last frost. My lettuce plants often die once the temperature starts to climb up into the 80s and above, and those that survive end up tasting bitter. But even now, in mid to upper 90s Virginia weather, the lettuce is holding strong and tastes delicious!

Review:

I grew this one from seed and it actually survived a hard frost for us (26 degrees), no problem! I should have planted more at the time, but started more seeds a couple of weeks later. Definitely a keeper for me that I will grow repeatedly.
