Parris Island Cos Lettuce

This variety boasts all the merits of a commercially bred variety, but the crisp and sweetly scrumptious leaves say heirloom. Parris Island Cos is a Romaine lettuce that is beloved by growers, especially on the Eastern Seaboard where it was originally introduced by Ferry Morse in 1951. Super uniform, upright leaves, observed disease tolerance and moderate bolt resistance were the growing traits selected at Clemson College Agriculture department when it was bred for their South Carolina climate. The tender crisp leaves with delicate white hearts and the perfectly folded centers for scooping dips or holding dressings have won the hearts of gardeners for generations.

Review:

I grew this one from seed and it actually survived a hard frost for us (26 degrees), no problem! I should have planted more at the time, but started more seeds a couple of weeks later. Definitely a keeper for me that I will grow repeatedly.

Review:

Love, love this lettuce! Very easy and quick to germinate, grows quickly and is very tasty, crisp and easy to pick. In the Atlanta heat it has not slowed down at all. Has fed a family of two almost every night for six weeks. No problem with bugs, slugs or disease Am getting ready to order more seeds.

Review:

This is my second year growing this. Last fall I planted this lettuce but I had it too crowded. Even yet it grow all winter and I was able to transplant, with more space, in the spring. It did very well. I seeded it again this September and now (Oct. 27), I have nice heads forming. It grew much faster than the bibb lettuce I seeded at the same time. Very good tasting, fast growing, and winter hardy. Highly recommend.

Review:

I was excited to grow romaine for the first time since we are big time caesar-salad eaters. We had more than enough with just two small rows from this variety, and as noted in another review, I could cut an entire head down to the ground and it would send out multiple shoots to replace it. I also noticed that the deer, slugs, and bugs strangely left it alone while they devoured my other lettuces. Next year I'm going to do some succession planting with this one.
