Description

(Pisum sativum). This time-honored variety produces some of the largest pods we’ve ever seen in snow peas—often reaching 5-6 inches in length! The robust plants vine to 5 feet. The bicolored flowers, borne in pairs, are pink and burgundy, maturing through purple to nearly sky blue, distinctive and pretty enough to merit a spot in the border. The succulent pods are of robust flavor and vary somewhat from plant to plant, which makes this variety all the more interesting in stir fries and salads. Originated in Maussane, near Avignon in southern France.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Carouby De Maussane snow pea, a French heirloom variety, is best grown in cool weather, making it ideal for early spring or fall planting. To ensure optimal growth, plant these peas in full sun or partial shade and provide them with well-drained, rich soil with a neutral pH. Incorporating compost or well-rotted manure before planting can significantly enhance soil quality and moisture retention.

When to Grow

Carouby De Maussane snow peas are best planted when the soil temperature is above 45 F, 4-6 weeks ahead of the last frost date, or in later summer for fall harvest. For an extended harvest, you can plant a second batch a few weeks after the first planting. These peas take approximately 65 days to reach maturity.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Carouby De Maussane seeds 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart in well-drained soil. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to about 4 inches apart to ensure they have enough space to grow. Since these peas are vining, providing support with a trellis or similar structure is crucial. Plant them in full sun to partial shade, ensuring they receive 6-12 hours of sun daily.

How to Grow

Peas need regular watering, especially during dry periods, to maintain soil moisture. Mulching around the base of the plants can help retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Regular harvesting encourages the plants to produce more pods and extends the harvesting period. The pods can be used fresh in salads, stir-fries, or frozen for later use.

How to Save

Peas will self pollinate. However, to ensure purity, it is best to isolate by 25-50 feet between varieties to dissuade wandering bees from cross pollinating flowers if you are planning to save the seeds. Allow the pods to dry on the plants, then thresh and dry the seeds indoors for two weeks before sealing them in an airtight container. Properly stored, pea seeds remain viable for up to five years.

FAQ
