Description

(Pisum sativum). One of the best-tasting peas we have ever tried. This superior variety was saved by a Mennonite farmer named Lillian. It is not an old, storied heirloom of antiquity, but rather a discontinued commercial variety that this family did not want to see disappear. Lillian explained that she grew Caseload peas from Johnny’s Seeds and when the company discontinued them, she saved some of the seeds. After almost two decades of seed saving, the variety has developed unique characteristics making it different from the original Caseload pea. Vines reach 2-3 feet in length with peas about 2.5-3 inches long, containing 5-7 large, sweet peas.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

To ensure optimal growth, plant Lilian’s Caseload peas in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. They thrive in cool weather, making early spring and fall the best times to plant. Ensure the plants receive full sun to partial shade, 6-12 hours of sunlight daily, for best results.

When to Grow

Lillian's Caseload peas should be planted in early spring, about 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost, or in late summer for a fall harvest. These peas are suitable for USDA Zones 3-9 and can tolerate light frost, making them versatile for various growing conditions. Checking your local last and first frost dates will help you time your planting perfectly.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow the seeds directly into the garden, planting them 1 inch deep and about 4 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. These peas can grow up to 3 feet tall and will benefit from support, such as a trellis or stakes, to keep the plants upright and productive.

How to Grow

The ideal temperature for these peas is 45-80 F.  Water the plants regularly, especially during flowering and pod development stages, but avoid waterlogging. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest the pods when they are young and tender to encourage continuous production. Regular harvesting results in more abundant crops and maintains the quality of the peas.

How to Save

Peas will self pollinate. However, to ensure purity, it is best to isolate by 25-50 feet between varieties to dissuade wandering bees from cross pollinating flowers if you plan to save the seeds. Allow the pods to dry on the plants, then thresh and dry the seeds indoors for two weeks before sealing them in an airtight container. Properly stored, pea seeds remain viable for up to five years.

FAQ

What type of support do Lillian's Caseload peas need?
They can grow up to 3 feet tall and benefit from support such as trellises or stakes. This helps keep the plants upright, prevents them from sprawling, and makes harvesting easier.

Can I grow Lillian's Caseload peas in containers?
Yes, Lillian's Caseload peas can be grown in containers. Choose a container that is at least 12 inches deep with good drainage. Provide a small trellis or support sticks to keep the plants upright and productive.

How do I fertilize Lillian's Caseload peas?
Before planting, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure. During the growing season, side-dress with a balanced fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium to promote healthy growth and pod production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can lead to lush foliage but fewer peas.
