Growing Tips

Aji Chombo, a powerful and fruity heirloom pepper from Panama, thrives in warm climates similar to habaneros. Growing these peppers requires full sun and warm temperatures, 70-95 F, ideally in tropical to subtropical environments.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors once temperatures stay above 65 F. In USDA Zones 9 and higher, they can continue producing seasonally.

How to Sow and Plant

Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in warm, moist soil, about 70-95 F. After germination, transfer seedlings outdoors, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. Container growth is also effective due to the plant's compact form.

How to Grow

Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with balanced fertilizer, and prune to encourage bushier growth. Monitor for pests and support branches as needed to handle heavy fruiting.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
