Description

(Capsicum annuum). A beautiful and delicious heirloom pepper from North Macedonia. This jalapeño-level hot pepper was brought to us by Steve Neumann, who also introduced the phenomenal and uniquely etched Rheza pepper and the Ajvarksi pepper. Steve collected the seeds for this variety while visiting the village of Kalugeritsa. This super rare pepper is not known outside of the region, and he was unable to find a variety name; therefore the pepper bears the name of the little town in which it is grown. We love this pretty little pointed pepper. The flavor is full-bodied, and it is one of the best peppers for roasting!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Kalugeritsa peppers thrive in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. They prefer full sun exposure, while also appreciating a bit of afternoon shade during the peak of summer. During germination, we recommend using a heat may to keep the soil consistently warm.

When to Grow

Start Kalugeritsa seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before the last expected frost date. Once nighttime temperatures remain consistently above 65 F, transplant them outside. This variety performs well in USDA Zones 6–10, especially during warm, sunny seasons.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting mix, keeping the soil evenly moist until germination, which takes 7–10 days. When seedlings are about 3–4 inches tall, transplant them to garden beds or large containers, spacing plants 14-18 inches apart to allow for growth. These peppers do well in containers with at least 3 gallons of soil, especially if you want flexibility in positioning them for optimal sunlight.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
