Description

(Capsicum annuum). A lovely drying pepper that comes from Matrafured, Hungary. It has been grown there since the 1800s when it was brought from Leutschau (Slovakia). The short, erect plants grow fast and are loaded with medium-hot paprikas sporting a sweet aroma and crisp texture. Its great flavor, uniform shape, and thin walls make it terrific for smoking, drying, and grinding to a delicious spicy powder. Very rare and not often found outside of its native Hungary!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

The Leutschauer Paprika pepper is a traditional Hungarian and Slovak heirloom that thrives in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. It prefers full sun, but also appreciates a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Begin seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before the last expected frost date. Once all danger of frost has passed, transplant seedlings into the garden or containers. Leutschauer Paprika peppers do best in USDA Zones 5–10 and will continue producing peppers throughout the warm season.

How to Sow and Plant

Begin seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before the last expected frost date. Once all danger of frost has passed, transplant seedlings into the garden or containers. Leutschauer Paprika peppers do best in USDA Zones 5–10 and will continue producing peppers throughout the warm season.

How to Grow

Leutschauer Paprika peppers require 8-12 hours of direct sunlight daily and prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Water consistently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer, reducing nitrogen as the plant starts to flower.

How to Save
  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
