Growing Tips

The Poblano pepper is a mild, versatile, heirloom pepper that grows best in warm conditions, in rich and well-draining soil. The plants prefer full sun but during the hottest summer weather also appreciate a bit of afternoon shade.

When to Grow

Start Poblano seeds indoors about 8-12 weeks before your area’s last frost date to give the plants enough time to establish before transplanting. Transplant outdoors only after the last frost has passed and temperatures stay above 65 F.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Poblano seeds 1/4 inch deep. Germination takes about 7-10 days, so keep the soil at a temperature between 80-85 F during this time. A heat mat can help keep the soil warm for faster germination. When seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves, harden them off gradually over a week before transplanting. Plant them 14-18 inches apart.

How to Grow

Water the plants deeply, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal disease. Apply a balanced fertilizer when transplanting, and switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer once the plants begin flowering to support fruit development. Staking or caging the plants might be necessary to help support the branches as they develop fruit.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
