Growing Tips

Tobago Seasoning pepper is a mild, heirloom variety that is well-suited for warm climates and thrives when given a long growing season. It prefers rich, well-draining soil, and needs 8-12 hours of full sun per day.

When to Grow

These peppers are best grown in late spring through summer when temperatures are consistently warm. Start indoors in bright light 8-12 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant outdoors after the last frost date, especially in areas with shorter growing seasons to ensure plants reach full maturity.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Tobago Seasoning pepper seeds 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged and make sure it stays warm during germination, around 80–85 F. Once seedlings are 2–3 inches tall and outdoor temperatures are suitable, transplant them 14-18 inches apart.

How to Grow

Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every few weeks can help with growth. Use mulch to help retain soil moisture and moderate temperature. Tobago Seasoning peppers take approximately 90–100 days to mature, turning from green to a vibrant red when ready to harvest.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
