Growing Tips

The Trepadeira Werner pepper, an heirloom from Brazil, is relatively easy to grow. The plant prefers rich, well-draining soil and full sun; however, it can also appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Start indoors in bright light 8-12 weeks before the last frost date. Using a heat mat helps to warm up the soil and speed up germination. Transplant Trepadeira Werner peppers outdoors in late spring once all danger of frost has passed. In cooler climates, growing them in pots or a greenhouse can help them reach full maturity within a single season.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil, and maintain consistent moisture. Once seedlings have two to three true leaves, transplant them outdoors or into larger containers. Space plants 14-18 inches apart. These bushy plants might need staking to support them.

How to Grow

Trepadeira Werner peppers need 8-12 hours of sunlight per day. Water consistently but avoid waterlogging, as these plants prefer slightly moist, well-draining soil. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. Regular pruning can encourage bushier growth and improve fruit production.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
