Description

(Capsicum chinense). Yellow Seven Pot pepper is a most dangerously deceptive piece of eye candy. These cheerful canary yellow peppers are highly ornamental, lending a tropical feel to the edible landscape. Wise gardeners know not to turn their backs on this attractive fruit. The Yellow Seven Pot pepper from Trinidad ranks as one of the world’s hottest peppers, with over 1 million on the Scoville scale! The inviting yellow color does indicate a milder fruit than the darker-colored Seven Pot peppers, but this remains one of the world’s hottest peppers and is not to be taken lightly. A phenomenal pepper for making zippy yellow hot sauce, although not for the faint of heart!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

The Yellow Seven Pot pepper is a super-hot heirloom pepper that needs warm temperatures, full sun, and a long growing season for best results.  It grows best in rich, well-draining soil, and, as germination can be a little tricky, we recommend using a heat mat to help keep the soil at 80-85 F.

When to Grow

Start Yellow Seven Pot seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost date in your area. These peppers need a long season of warm weather, so transplant outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed and temperatures stay above 65 F. It’s best to check local frost dates and your USDA hardiness zone.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting trays or small pots filled with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Maintain a soil temperature of 80-85 F for germination and make sure the seedlings have enough light from a bright window or grow lights. Before transplanting outdoors, harden off seedlings by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions. In the garden, space plants 14-18 inches apart, or grow them in individual containers.

How to Grow

Plant Yellow Seven Pot peppers in full sun, ensuring they receive 8-12 hours of sunlight daily. They grow best in rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Fertilize at planting with a balanced fertilizer, and switch to a low-nitrogen fertilizer as plants start to flower.

How to Save
  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
