Description

(Petunia superbissima). Gargantuan rose-colored blooms with deeply ruffled edges will have you wondering if this is actually a petunia! This is the amazing petunia that we used in the Baker Creek test kitchen to make "cherry" limeade. Boil the petals for a teal-colored beverage; adding a squeeze of lime will turn the mixture bright pink! This “superbissima type” petunia has blooms that reach almost 7 inches across. It comes from Černý Seed Company in the Czech Republic. The blooms are sweetly scented and have a cherry-like flavor. This mammoth petunia looks stunning in pots, beds and borders, and it is also highly attractive to a range of pollinators.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Superbissima Giant Rose petunia is an heirloom variety that thrives in warmth. It needs full sun and well-draining soil for best performance. Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer and deadheading spent blooms will encourage continuous flowering.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Once all danger of frost has passed and temperatures don’t drop below 50 F, transplant seedlings outdoors. Petunias prefer warm temperatures and should not be exposed to frost. If you are unsure of your frost dates, consult our blog postOur Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’

How to Sow and Plant

Surface sow the seeds, using a moist seed-starting mix. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil at a temperature of 70-85 F for optimal germination. Once seedlings develop two to three sets of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots. Before planting outdoors, harden off the seedlings by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions over a 7-10 day long period.

How to Grow

Transplant petunias 10-12 inches apart in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Water about once a week but avoid overwatering, as petunias dislike soggy roots. Applying a light layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pinch back young plants to encourage bushy growth and more blooms. Deadheading spent flowers will also help with continuous flowering. Watch for common pests like aphids and caterpillars.

How to Save

  • Petunias will readily self-seed in mild winter climates.

  • To save seed, hand-pick the brown seed pods.

  • Take care to collect the seed pods before they burst and spread the seeds across the garden.

  • Store the seeds over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
