Pink "Okra"

Not a true okra, but a superb edible ornamental; sweetheart pink blooms with lemony yellow centers give way to tiny tasty “okra” pods. The gorgeous blooms are irresistible to bees and butterflies, and you will find pollinators are sure to flock any place that pink okra grows. These heat-loving flowers are a lovely reminder that okra is closely related to hibiscus.

What are the pros? Very attractive

What are the cons? Unknown

Review:

Compare this to the description for A. moschatus: http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Abelmoschus moschatus In other words, it's related to okra, but a different species. Might be worth trying for the edible leaves and flowers.

What are the pros? nice small ornamental plant

What are the cons? none

Review:

This plant is a relative to Okra its common name is musk mallow the oil extracted from the seeds has a musky smell and is used in some perfumes, the botanical name is Abelmoschus manihot ssp. there is a yellow flowered species also this could also be Abelmoschus manihot ssp turberosus which has a tuberous root similar to a carrot which in Asia is used for coughs, and diuretic purposes it could have other uses also. I grew this plant several years ago and liked it ornamental value.

What are the pros? Pretty flowers

What are the cons? Pod is barely edible

Review:

Nice as an ornamental but don't plant this to eat. The pods are paper thin and quickly turn to a paper taste while very small. If you pick them the day after blooming, it's edible but extremely tiny and not tasty. After that it's just like eating tissue paper. Grows very slow but hangs in there well.

What are the pros? Looks great in July, August

What are the cons? None

Review:

Took a few months for this plant to get started, but well worth the wait. Very ornamental. Beautiful pink flowers open each morning. Prolific production. Next year this is going in my front yard right next to the walkway.

What are the pros? don't know, YET!

What are the cons? Don't know, YET!!

Review:

This is not sabdariffa, The seed pod is too smooth. And the flower is different. Sabdariffa grows all over the Caribbean.
