English Plantain (Plantago lanceolata). Legendary herb used for centuries; many benefits having been ascribed to this plant. The leaves sometimes cooked for greens. Plants form a low rosette of leaves,10-20” in diameter. In time a bare, tall flower stem emerges from the crown, reminiscent in a way of tiny cattails. Some small birds relish the seeds in season, and the plant hosts several species of moths. This common plant has naturalized widely but we offer an improved strain.

What are the pros? easy, medicinal, effective

What are the cons? none

Review:

Learned in herbal school about plantain being an anti-viral, anti-microbrial, astringent, and effective healer of bug and mosquito bites, skin lesions, and both internal and external infections. I'm so happy to have this plant. Drought tolerant and comes back every year. I am allergic to mosquitoes and break out with huge hives and asthma. Plantain continues to save me in the yard, I just pick a few leaves, chew on them to release the juice, and add the mash to my bites. Stops the itching IMMEDIATELY and reduces the inflammation in a matter of 30 min. I've also used this internally and succesfully to fight multiple sinus infections and even a tooth abcsess when I rinsed my mouth with the infusion 5 times per day and drank the tea. It's a powerful astringent, and I've even used it on spider bites. Makes an effective salve and tincture as well. Wish I had plantain products while in Costa Rica and Bali where the mosquitoes are vicious. I'll never travel the tropics w/o this medicine again

What are the pros? Everything

What are the cons? Absolutely nothing

Review:

Direct sowed, came up quickly and filled out even faster, respectfully stayed only where it was planted. Endured dry spells as well as overwatering from my kids. We used it for herbal tea and medicinally for all of summer's scrapes, sunburns, stings and mosquito bites. The space it was planted in remained largely weed and entirely pest free - literally as maintenance free as they come. I was pleasantly surprised to see that despite having our worst winter in decades it came back with no prompting like a faithful and welcome old friend, right where I left it last fall. It'll always have a place in my garden.

Review:

This and the Broadleaf (P. major) are my most beloved and commonly used medicinal plants. Not only is it very strongly anti-microbial, it is also a Vulnerary, meaning it speeds up the healing process greatly! With these marvelous plants, I very effectively treat everything from small cuts, lacerations, abrasions, burns, bacterial/viral infections of the skin, and fungal infections (internal and external). I live in jungle which is by its very nature teeming with life, including all manner of pathogens. Also great used the same on chickens, guinea fowl, dogs. They also seek it out to eat when they have internal issues that the Plantago can help. I tear my hands up constantly, and any time I want to prevent or stymie an already existing infection I go straight to these. No infection ever takes hold. Its amazing and I don't understand why more don't sing the Plantago's praises! To use it, mash to a pulp and make a poultice. Place on the site in need and wrap. Works best kept MOIST.

Review:

This is a pretty green plant in our high desert mountains and my honeybees really like it in late summer when other plants start to fade even thought the flowers are small.
