Description

(Papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum). Breadseed type. A deeply dramatic poppy, with intricately ruffled blooms in shades of obsidian to dark burgundy. The flowers are fully double and very large, from 3-5 inches across! This show-stopping variety stuns in the landscape or in arrangements, and it's unique in that the seed pods also make a wonderful addition to dried flower designs. These annual plants stand 3-4 feet in height and will readily self-sow in the garden.

Growing Tips

Black Peony poppies grow best in full sun and moderately rich, loose, well-drained soil, requiring minimal care once established. Direct sowing is preferred because the plants don’t transplant well due to their sensitive roots. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.

When to Grow

For best results, sow Black Peony poppy seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in the fall in warmer climates (Zones 7-10). They prefer cooler temperatures, ideally 60-65 F.

How to Sow and Plant

To plant Black Peony poppies, scatter the seeds directly onto loosened soil and press them lightly into the surface to ensure good soil contact. Keep the area moist until germination occurs, which typically takes 14-21 days. Thin seedlings to 8-10 inches apart once they sprout to give them room to grow.

How to Grow

These poppies are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants once they are established. They perform best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Regular watering is only necessary during the initial growth phase, as mature plants require minimal water. Deadheading can extend the blooming period by encouraging new flower formation.

How to Save

  • Mostly self-pollinating; however, small flies and honeybees may cross-pollinate closely planted varieties.
  • Often self-sows, but you can also harvest seeds when capsules turn brown and dry completely.
  • Save seed over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
