Description

(Papaver somniferum). Breadseed-type poppy in shades of red, purple, and pink. The papery blooms are so large and showy! And after blooming is done, large pods yield blue-gray poppy seeds, ideal for use in baking and confections. Simply shake the seeds out and store them, then use the empty pods in dried arrangements. At 3-4 feet in height, the brilliant flowers and prickly, gray-green foliage are quite a sight!

Growing Tips

Florist Pepperbox poppies thrive in full sun and moderately rich, loose, well-drained soil. While they can tolerate poor soil, enriching the planting area with compost or organic matter will enhance their growth. These poppies are drought-tolerant once established, but they will benefit from regular watering during prolonged dry periods.

When to Grow

The best time to sow Florist Pepperbox seeds is in either fall or early spring. Fall sowing allows the seeds to naturally stratify during the winter, leading to better germination in the spring. In colder climates, the seeds can overwinter and germinate when the soil thaws. For spring sowing, seeds should be planted as early as the soil can be worked.

How to Sow and Plant

Florist Pepperbox seeds are best sown directly in the garden, as they have delicate root systems and do not transplant well. Sprinkle the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil, lightly rake them in, and keep the area moist until germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. The seeds should be sown very thinly, and seedlings should be thinned to 8-10 inches apart to avoid overcrowding.

How to Grow

Once established, Florist Pepperbox poppies require little maintenance. Water them during dry periods, especially while they are young, to encourage growth. They are also self-seeding, so once planted, you may see them reappear in future seasons without needing to replant.

How to Save

  • Mostly self-pollinating; however, small flies and honeybees may cross-pollinate closely planted varieties.
  • Often self-sows, but you can also harvest seeds when capsules turn brown and dry completely.
  • Save seed over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
