(Solanum tuberosum). This royal tuber was selected for its deep purple color, high yield, and delicious flavor, and the results are exceptional! Colorado State University breeders crossed this variety, and the result is a potato with bright violet skin and flesh and plants that are quite hearty and disease resistant. An early- to mid-season maturing variety, it is perfect for new potatoes and should be consumed fairly promptly, as the shelf life is not long!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

For a high-yield Purple Majesty potato crop, plant in well-draining, loose soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.0-6.0). Use hilling techniques to prevent sun exposure on tubers, which can cause greening. Maintain consistent moisture but avoid overwatering. Rotate crops yearly to prevent disease.

When to Grow

Plant Purple Majesty potatoes in early spring, once soil temperatures reach at least 45°F and after the last frost. In warmer climates, a fall planting is also possible.  Check your local region’s frost-free dates to ensure proper planting time. How to Sow and Plant

Unlike regular seed potatoes, microtubers should not be cut before planting. Plant the whole microtubers about 2 inches deep, spaced 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart. Cover the tubers with soil, and as the plants grow, hill up soil around the base of the stems to encourage additional tuber formation and protect the potatoes from sunlight, which can cause greening. Use loose soil or straw for hilling, ensuring the plants have ample room to grow.

How to Grow

Water deeply once or twice a week, keeping soil evenly moist but not soggy. Hill soil around the stems when plants reach 6 inches tall to encourage higher yields. Fertilize with a balanced, organic fertilizer every few weeks. Monitor for pests like potato beetles and use crop rotation to prevent soil-borne diseases.

How to Save

  • Potatoes will fruit, but the seeds will not breed true. That is why potatoes are propagated from tubers instead of seeds.
  • Provide ideal storage conditions in order to keep your tubers over winter until the following spring planting date.
  • Be sure to cure tubers before storing, and store cured tubers in a cool, dark, dry location. Ideal storage temperature is 38-40 F.
  • Provide good air circulation in your storage area to discourage rot.

FAQ

Why are my Purple Majesty potatoes so small?
Small tubers often result from overcrowding, lack of nutrients, or insufficient hilling. Ensure proper spacing, fertilize regularly, and mound soil around stems to promote tuber development.

Can I grow Purple Majesty potatoes in containers?
Yes! Choose a deep container (10+ gallons) with good drainage. Use loose, rich soil, plant 3-5 inches deep, and hill soil as plants grow to maximize yield.

Do Purple Majesty potatoes taste different from regular potatoes?
Yes! These potatoes have a rich, slightly nutty flavor with a creamy texture. Their deep purple flesh retains color when cooked, making them a visually striking and nutritious choice.

What is the difference between microtubers and regular seed potatoes?
They are grown in much the same way - don’t cut the microtubers as you might with larger seed potatoes, and don’t plant them quite as deeply into the soil.  Check out our blog post “Can’t Top These Tiny Taters” for more details!
