This visually attractive lima bean came to us from the Potawatomi Nation in Oklahoma. The history of this fascinating bean should be subject to further research since the Potawatomi originated in what is now Indiana and South American lima beans were not grown by Woodland peoples until after contact with Spanish and Portuguese traders during the late 1500s. Nonetheless, this handsome heirloom is perhaps one of the most beautiful of the Sieva types (see our Red Saba for more on that bean lineage). In this case, the white seeds are splashed with bright red, then pebbled and streaked with black. Like other Sieva varieties, this lima grows on 8 to 10 foot vines with 2 to 4 seeds per pod. Seeds may be harvested as shelling limas while green or as dry beans for winter succotash and casseroles. Allow 85 days for harvest of the dry beans.
