A beautifully bronze-tinged, loose-leafed lettuce developed by Alan Chadwick, the legendary Biodynamic farming innovator of the mid 20th century. Chadwick greatly influenced the organic farming movement in California and beyond. Chadwick combined techniques of French intensive farming and Biodynamics to create an influential and enduring system that lives on today, including at the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz, which he established in 1967. Chadwick’s Rodan is perfectly suited for dense plantings to fit into the French intensive gardening style. Sow seeds in bands for loose leaves or set plants 6 inches apart for larger leaves.

Growing Tips: Chadwick's Rodan lettuce is well-suited for small gardens due to its compact size. It thrives in 60-80 F and grows best in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Moisture is important, so the soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged. To minimize competition for nutrients and ensure proper growth, space plants about 8 inches apart. Regularly check for pests like aphids and slugs and protect the plants from extreme weather using row covers or shade cloths.
