Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Matilda grass typically grows to about 24-30 inches tall and does well in mixed beds, borders, and containers. To ensure healthy growth, provide well-drained soil with regular watering, especially during dry periods. It thrives in full sun to partial shade.  Learn More >>

When to Grow

Matilda grass should be planted 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. This provides ideal conditions with moderate temperatures and sufficient moisture, which are essential for seed germination and establishment.

How to Sow and Plant

Start by loosening the soil to a depth of about 2-3 inches. Remove any weeds, rocks, or debris to create a clean seedbed. You can mix in compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility. Surface sow and lightly tap into the substrate. This helps protect the seeds from birds and ensures good seed-to-soil contact.

How to Grow

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist. Reduce watering frequency as the grass matures but water more deeply. Fertilize the grass with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage strong growth and root development. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regularly remove any dead or yellowing leaves to promote healthy growth.

How to Save
  • Cut off dried seed heads and place them in a paper bag. Loose seeds will fall to the bottom of the bag. Seeds still in the seed head will continue to dry until they are ready to fall out.
  • After 1-2 weeks shake the bag to dislodge the remaining seeds.
  • Separate seed from the chaff.
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place until you are ready to plant.
FAQ

How often should I water Matilda grass seeds?
Initially, water daily to keep the soil moist. As the grass grows, water less frequently but deeply, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions.

Can Matilda grass grow in partial shade?
Yes, Matilda grass can tolerate partial shade, though it thrives best in full sun.

What should I do if the grass is not germinating?
Make sure that the soil is consistently moist and check that the seeds are not buried too deeply. Matilda grass prefers well-drained soil, so avoid overwatering, which can cause seed rot.
