Description

(Raphanus sativus). A wonderful Chinese delicacy! It’s a daikon-type radish with the most glossy, smooth leaves and white, cylindrical roots that reach 6-8 inches. It is very similar to The White Icicle radish and ideal for fresh eating. We are enamored with this no-waste radish. Unlike other radish varieties, the leaves are free of spiny hairs and are tender, glazed, and sweet like spinach. Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

China Jade radish is a variety that grows best in well-drained, loose soil with full sun. These radishes prefer cool weather conditions and should be grown early to avoid becoming tough. Consistent moisture is essential to prevent the roots from becoming woody and splitting.

When to Grow

China Jade radishes are best grown starting 4 weeks before the last frost date. They grow best in cooler temperatures, typically around 50-75 F. Avoid planting them during the peak of summer, as high temperatures can cause the radishes to bolt and become bitter.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly into the garden bed about 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 1-2 inches apart in rows that are 12 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3-4 inches apart to give each plant enough space to develop properly. For continuous harvests, sow seeds every two weeks.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent moisture by watering regularly, especially during dry periods, to encourage rapid growth. Use mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Keep the soil loose to allow the radishes to grow without restriction. Monitor for common pests like flea beetles and root maggots.

How to Save

  • Radishes are insect-pollinated, so you’ll need to isolate varieties by up to 1⁄2 mile or stagger plantings to avoid flowering at the same time.
  • Staggering can be easy because of the radish’s quick maturity.
  • Allow flower stalks to shoot up and seed pods to dry on the plant before picking pods and opening by hand to remove the seeds.
  • Seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years when stored in an airtight container.

FAQ

Can China Jade radishes be grown in containers?
Yes, use a deep container to accommodate root growth. Plant in a well-draining potting mix and ensure consistent moisture.

How far apart should I  space China Jade radishes?
Thin plants to 3-4 inches apart once seedlings emerge for optimal growth.

How do you know when to harvest China Jade radishes?
Harvest when roots reach about 6-8 inches in length and are tender. Leaving them too long may result in a woody texture. This variety typically matures in about 60 days, depending on growing conditions.
