What are the pros? Flavor
What are the cons? Tough pods
These beans taste great but they take much longer to cook compared to Blue Lake or Kentucky Wonder. Took over an hour boiling to get them tender enough to eat. These were 3-6 inch long pods. I would recommend them but with the caveat about cooking time.

The wide-spreading bush plants are beautiful, and the delicate flowers, some pink and and many biicolor pink and white, make a beautiful border in our edible gardens. Extremely productive, easy to pick due to the deep-rose colored pods. My family are all greasy-bean snobs way back, and we have been lucky to have a connection with many well-known heirloom bean collectors for many years, so when I say this is a new family favorite, it's high praise for us. The beans have similar flavor to greasies and cutshorts, with good nutty overtones. The stringless pods have a wonderful texture, and beans cooked Appalachian style don't have the tendency to shatter that many if our favorites exhibit. Steamed, Red Swan has a beautiful deep green color, and is also excellent as a cold crudite and superb for dilled beans due to the tender but firm, thick pod. Doesn't make a good filet, and a bit slower to germinate than some others, but near 100% even so.

I LOVE this bean. It was a heavy producer, and the plants stood up for easy picking. I put them out early before the Japanese beetles got going. I will grow way more of these next year!

I grew three types of beans this year from Baker's Creek. WOW is all I can say about this bean. It was without a doubt the best in terms of yields and appearance. Their color makes them easy to find. They definitely are more of a magenta color for me with subtle green here and there. They do turn green when cooked which is fine. I planted these beans sometime in June. When they flowered, they were COVERED with blooms and they all turned into little beans. They grew quickly and perfectly (nice slender, symmetrical shape). We used almost all of them to make fermented beans (they taste like pickles). Just when I thought they were done, each plant sent out additional stalks like a foot long COVERED with more flowers. It has been weeks with no signs of slowing down!!! LOVE THESE. I have made so many quarts of fermented beans and cukes and my family is very happy. Might be the only bean I plant from now on!! Do yourself a favor and give these a try...you won't regret it.

What are the pros? Almost an ornamental.
I generally don't care for bush beans but this one is the exception. Very good yields, no strings even when larger. Good flavor. The plants ran a little taller than most bush beans for me- close to three feet container grown. BTW this is the best bean I have found for container culture. It adapts well to changeable weather. Excellent germination %. Pink flowers and red pods are beautiful. Turn green when cooked so they don't look weird on the plate. I will be growing this bean for about 50% of my crop next year. I like it nearly as well as my short cut greasy beans, and it's rare for a bush bean to even approach a pole bean in taste IMHO.
