(Tithonia rotundifolia) (GOLDEN FLOWER OF THE AZTECS) Brilliant, red-orange, 2”- 3” flowers; an excellent butterfly plant. These bloom over a very long season, and the plants produce masses of blooms. The large 5’ plants are very beautiful. I enjoyed these as I traveled along the roadsides in the high mountains in central Mexico.

What are the pros? Gorgeous and drought resistant

What are the cons? None

Review:

These are so beautiful and easy to grow. They bloomed many times throughout the summer and into the fall and the pollinators loved them. I live in the Chihuahuan Desert and these plants enjoyed lots of sun and didn't require too much watering. Mine grew to about 4' tall. Planting many more throughout the yard and garden this year.

What are the pros? Flowers are beautiful

What are the cons? too big for spot planted

Review:

I will plan their planting spot better next year, they were very vigorous! and got up to 8-10 feet tall!! They did suffer some damage from heavy rains & hail, but even with bent stems still kept on flowering. Had 6 Monarch butterflies dancing over the flowers all summer, and 4 kinds of bees - 2 tiny ones, honey and big fuzzy bubbles. I will plant them again and give them some support. Saved seeds and shared with some friends, the silly squirrels liked eating the prickly seed pods. When the frost takes them, they dry out and are fairly easy to break up to clean up the garden before winter, just watch out for the prickly seed pods.

What are the pros? Beautiful flowers, huge plants

What are the cons? What's not to like?

Review:

I put in seeds which didn't germinate due to cold. Re-sowed and they all germinated. I had to thin out and right now I have two over 7 foot tall bushes covered in flowers. My goodness, they are just pumping out the flowers!! I guess this will continue until frost, so they have possibly 2 more months. They are fabulous monsters providing nectar in later summer. They started blooming in middle of July. The bumblebees and Swallowtail and Monarch butterflies are having a wonderful time. These are the silkiest smooth plants to touch. They will be a regular in my 'jungle' pollinator garden from now on.

What are the pros? Continuous blooms!

What are the cons? None

Review:

Planted these with 2 other Sunflower varieties this year. Had several neighbors ask when they were developing if they were weeds but then the blooms came and everyone has enjoyed them. The bees and butterflies can't get enough and the bright orange flowers are plentiful. They have been blooming since late June and we are approaching September. No signs of them slowing down. No maintenance in the south with our periodic rain storms. Fully intend to plant them again next year. Got much taller than I thought they would (just as tall as my Titan Sunflower this year!)
